Aperture Cellars has worked with SJ Ranch Vineyard for their site-specific portfolio of wines for the past seven years, and now for the first time are isolating some of the most uniquely exquisite blocks for an exercise in singular expression. This parcel referred to as the “Gravel Pit,” segments a very specific vineyard block and focuses on the unique terroir shaped by a rocky, gravely soil influence. Founder and Winemaker, Jesse Katz, maintains a winemaking philosophy that naturally influences a way to reflect the land, vineyards and climates that grow the fruit. This is an exciting opportunity to highlight this unique block with Aperture’s winemaking style of retaining the freshness and rich fruit characteristics with an underlying textural elegance.

Aperture Cellars has consistently worked with Phil Freese to manage the viticulture at this site, as well as all Aperture vineyards. This collaboration with an internationally acclaimed wine growing advisor, with an intimate knowledge of the world’s vineyards, has challenged and influenced them to look at very specific elements when approaching a site, or in this case a single block. Jesse Katz has been working extensively with Phil Freese throughout the Aperture portfolio of vineyards, and their experience has created a strong partnership between viticulture and winemaking that aids to achieve the full expression of wine character from each site.

The winemaking approach of this one time block designation showcases the terroir driven expression of the site refined with a layered elegance, a style that is reflective of the winery as demonstrated throughout their Bordeaux varietal collection of wines. The well-drained, rocky gravel soil gives this wine a rich, full-bodied expression while still balancing a silky and beautifully integrated texture.
