Lot #14 DAVERO FARMS & WINERY
OLD WORLD PRIMITIVO
- Dry Creek Valley
ABOUT THE WINE:
Never before has the winemaking team at DaVero seen such concentrated fruit and complex aromas come from their Primitivo, resulting in an “Old World” feel to this vintage. Perhaps it was the wisdom of the old vines or simply a lucky location in the valley that has helped make this barrel lot so special.
DaVero Farms & Winery focuses on Italian grape varieties, which thrive in a Mediterranean climate like the one in Dry Creek Valley. They believe that starting with climate-appropriate grape varieties is the first step in making wines that are balanced and expressive of site. Davero also believes in farming regeneratively. They aim to create an environment on their farm that is as close to the environment in which a vine would naturally thrive and also to ensure their farming practices improve the land for the next generations. They continually focus on soil health, fostering biodiversity and nurturing a symbiotic ecosystem for grapes and more.
Winemaker Rea Prince aims to gently shepherd the grapes through fermentation and aging to best express their varietal and site character. For him, this means using only the native yeasts found on the grape skin for fermentation and aging in only neutral oak barrels to avoid any flavor influence from the barrel. This wine is restrained yet complex, with flavors of fresh plum, notes of cinnamon and tobacco, and a subtle umami characteristic reminiscent of teriyaki. It has a nice weight on the palate, balanced by juicy acidity and velvety tannin.
