Lot #15 DAVIS BYNUM
- Russian River Valley
ABOUT THE WINE:
This barrel lot is the last vintage of Pinot Noir that will be made from Jane’s Vineyard, which was planted to a mix of Dijon, Swiss and heritage clones of Pinot Noir. It is a unique blend of small lot fermented Pinot Noir from the incredible 2021 vintage, making “Red Sunset” a wine that collectors will eagerly anticipate opening for only the most special occasions.
Davis Bynum was a pioneer in the Russian River Valley, making his first single vineyard Pinot Noir in 1973 from a winery built out of an old hop kiln. The winemaking philosophy of minimalist viticulture is the product of deep respect and understanding of the Russian River Valley’s unique terroir. In keeping with Bynum’s “hands-off” winemaking philosophy, Davis Bynum wines are unfiltered. This natural, Old World style of winemaking yields a more complex, aromatic, flavorful wine with more nuanced characteristics than would otherwise be seen in the bottle.
“Red Sunset” Pinot Noir was barrel fermented and hand-punched, which elicits the most out of the grapes through a more time consuming and laborious method, so the winemaking team at Davis Bynum only uses these practices for certain wines. The wine scintillates with streaks of strawberry, cherry and plum over an earthy land of savory caramelized wood and spice, leaving a lingering sweetness in the air.
