ABOUT THE WINE:

Chateau St. Jean’s 50th anniversary will be celebrated throughout 2023. This Never Before, Never Again auction lot is a nod to the winery’s pioneering role in Sonoma County red wines of distinction, notably Cinq Cépages. This wine was the first Sonoma County wine named “Wine of the Year” by Wine Spectator in 1999 for the 1996 vintage and it has continued to garner annual acclaim, most recently with a 94 from the Wine Enthusiast for the 2019 vintage.

Bordeaux grape varietals, such as those featured in this lot, play an important role in Chateau St. Jean’s history. Cinq Cépages (‘five varietals’) is a Bordeaux blend first produced at Chateau St. Jean in 1990 that was conceived as an opportunity to produce a non-varietal wine which showcased the best features of Sonoma County Bordeaux varietals.

This “50th Anniversary Cabernet Sauvignon” features estate fruit from the first vintage of wines fully produced at the Chateau St. Jean winery in six years and the first by Winemaker Niki Williams. Expect rich, ripe blackberry and red plum, framed by dried herbs and sweet oak. It has an approachable structure in its youth, but a concentrated density that will allow it to age and evolve.
