Lot #17 DRY CREEK VINEYARD
50TH ANNIVERSARY FUMÉ BLANC
- Russian River Valley
ABOUT THE WINE:
“50th Anniversary Fumé Blanc” represents an integral piece of history for Sonoma County grape growing and winemaking by recreating Sonoma County’s first Fumé Blanc. This exclusive offering was created especially for the Sonoma County Barrel Auction to honor Dry Creek Vineyard’s family legacy of 50 years of winemaking and is only available via this barrel auction lot.
Established in 1972 by David S. Stare, Dry Creek Vineyard is now led by Dave’s daughter, Kim Stare Wallace. David was the first to plant Sauvignon Blanc in the Dry Creek Valley in 1972, in a vineyard subsequently named “DCV3.” While David waited for his young vineyard to develop, he sought out Sauvignon Blanc from the Rochioli family for the inaugural 1972 vintage of Dry Creek Vineyard Fumé Blanc, the first Sauvignon Blanc to be labeled as such from Sonoma County.
The winemaking team worked with Tom Rochioli to select a few specific rows of old vine selection Sauvignon Blanc to pay homage to the first vintage of Dry Creek Vineyard’s Fumé Blanc. The fruit was handpicked and whole cluster pressed to start this wine on the path to fresh vibrant flavors with gentle handling. Winemaker Tim Bell fermented this extraordinary wine in a combination of stainless steel barrels and Acacia wood barrels. Two different yeast strains were used to bring complexity and enhanced ester and thiol production. No malolactic fermentation was used. The result is fresh citrus and melon aromas with a hint of passionfruit and a pleasing richness accented by racy acidity.
