Lot #18 DONUM ESTATE
ABOUT THE WINE:
Originally planted in 1974, Ferguson Vineyard was replanted in 2018 and 2019. This barrel lot represents wine from the first crop of Pinot Noir grown in the newly replanted vineyard, so it’s aptly named “Ferguson First.” Donum has only bottled a single vineyard wine from Ferguson Vineyard twice before, in 2008 and 2009. That was before Donum Estate owned the vineyard, so this lot is their first “Estate Ferguson Vineyard” Pinot Noir ever.
Ferguson Vineyard was one of the first Pinot Noir vineyards planted in Carneros. It features uniquely rocky soil for the area, with large cobblestones. The hill is steep and has both eastern and western facing slopes, allowing for perfect ripening. Donum Estate farms Ferguson Vineyard and all of their ranches organically. Ferguson Vineyard will be certified organic by CCOF as of August 2022 and the cover crop is grazed by sheep.
“Ferguson First” was fermented with native yeast in a special half-ton wooden fermentation vessel called a “Perle” made by Tonnellerie Quintessence, which leads to an energetic, active fermentation. The wine is delicately balanced between richness and elegance. The fruit profile is dark, with plum, blackberry and cherry, with a structured palate and long finish dominated by exotic spice.
