ABOUT THE WINE:

“Machair” refers to the fertile grassy and sandy plain found on the exposed west-facing shores of Scotland and Ireland. It is a unique habitat and one of the rarest in Europe. The landscape in Annapolis is very similar, although at a higher elevation. To spotlight DuMOL’s first vintage from the highest elevation of their high-density Annapolis planting in the newly designated West Sonoma Coast AVA, this barrel auction lot was created as a blend of two heritage vine selections, Calera and Swan.

The 2022 vintage was the 27th vintage for DuMOL. Winegrower and Co-Owner Andy Smith has made 25 of these 27 vintages, capturing the potential of the vines through gentle, patient winemaking.

This special vineyard has an elevation of 900 feet and is less than five miles from the ocean. It boasts classic Goldridge sandy loam soil. The resulting “Machair” has dark, penetrating, crunchy fruit, and is bright and vibrant with high acidity and moderate tannin.
