Lot #20 MEDLOCK AMES
PHOENIX RISING FROM THE ASHES
Bell Mountain Vineyard
- Alexander Valley
ABOUT THE WINE:
When co-founders Ames Morison and Chris James discovered Bell Mountain Vineyard, they found crumbling terraces and neglected Jefferson clone Merlot vines, believed to have been propagated from vine cuttings taken by Thomas Jefferson at Château Petrus when he was ambassador to France. These old Merlot vines were nurtured back to health and became the original foundation for Medlock Ames, along with other Bordeaux varietals. “Phoenix Rising from the Ashes” is the last vintage made from those founding vines, as many used to create this blend were removed after the 2020 harvest due to impacts from the Kinkaid fire. This unique blend can never be recreated and is a testament to the winery’s commitment to persevere in the face of adversity.
Medlock Ames wines are made exclusively at Bell Mountain Vineyard which has been certified organic since 2006 and is currently pursuing Regenerative Organic Certification. Co-founder Ames Morison has been named as a 2022 Innovator at the Sonoma County Barrel Auction for being an organic farming pioneer in the area and promoting healthy, living soil that nurtures, feeds and protects the vines. He embraces age-old, low impact farming methods which allow the vineyard to shine through in the fruit. Preservation of the land is the driving ethos for Ames, as well as educating his customers and the public about organic farming.
Bell Mountain Vineyard straddles both the southeast tip of Alexander Valley and the Russian River Valley, giving it exceptionally cool nights and very hot days which creates richness, ripeness, and balance in the wines. Winemaker Abby Watt allows the expression of the fruit and Bell Mountain Vineyard to come through by harvesting each of their 25 blocks separately, then fermenting and aging in various barrels and neutral vessels. The more than 100 lots from each vintage give the winemaking team exceptional breadth for blending. The Malbec in this wine was entirely barrel fermented. “Phoenix Rising from the Ashes” is an explosion of blue and red berries, cocoa, and tart cherry, coupled with palate-cleansing acidity and velvety tannins that evolve with baking spices and warm preserves on the lingering finish.
