Lot #28 FREEMAN VINEYARD & WINERY
Yu-ki Estate Vineyard
- Sonoma Coast
ABOUT THE WINE:
This is the first-ever bottling of Freeman Vineyard & Winery Sparkling Rosé of Pinot Noir. The limited production of this wine has restricted its availability to the Friends of Freeman Wine Club members, so it is not sold via retail. The bubbles, joie-de-vivre and liveliness of this exciting new wine could only be summed up as “Effervescence Cuvée.” Yu-ki Estate Vineyard is a testament to the Freemans’ passion for finding an exceptional site and mastering the challenges that come with it. It is perched at 1,000 feet, on a steep slope, just a few miles from the Pacific Ocean. The vineyard was purchased in 2007, with a history of being used as a sheep farm in the 1860s. The terrain is steep and rugged, and the climate is cold and windy, resulting in very low yields of just 1 to 2 tons per acre.
Ken and Akiko Freeman founded Freeman Vineyards & Winery with the intention of combining pristine fruit from select growers in the coolest reaches of the Sonoma Coast with sustainable farming practices and minimalist winemaking to express the purest essence of cool climate California Pinot Noir. Yu-ki Vineyard is farmed organically and tended with strict concern for water, cover crops, pest control and optimum habitat maintenance. The unmatched depth and complexity of Yu-ki’s grapes are worth the effort. The property is part of a forested landscape that includes spectacular stands of old growth redwoods. The vineyard name “Yu-ki” in Japanese translates to “giant trees.” The Freemans donated a perpetual easement of these redwoods to the Bodega Land Trust in 2008, ensuring that these trees will never be cut down, and will be around for generations to come.
Winemaker Akiko and her team conduct as many as 40 individual clonal fermentations each vintage to create elegant wines that are imbued with a unique Japanese sensibility. Recognized for their balance, refinement and beauty, these rare wines are treasured by fans and critics worldwide. Because of the high elevation of the Yu-ki Vineyard and the closeness of the Pacific Ocean, this wine has extremely high-acidity, and is easily mistaken for a leading French grower Champagne.
