ABOUT THE WINE:

Sourced from the highest point, or “Alto Piano” (Italian for ‘high plain’), of the Bastoni Home Ranch with a 118-year wine growing history, this lot was harvested and vinified separately from the best lots of St. Peters Church clones and Du Pratt clones of Zinfandel growing on the property. This barrel auction lot is a carefully collaborated effort between winemaker Agostino Gamba and grower Russ Messana, who meticulously manages his vineyards.

The Gamba Family wine growing legacy began six generations ago in Northern Italy. Agostino Luigi Gamba left his home in search of the American dream and soon met vineyard owner Cesare Barbieri who was looking to retire and sell vineyard land he planted in 1900 in the Russian River Valley. Agostino Luigi Gamba bought the property in 1947 and passed away in 1983, leaving his 17-year-old son, Agostino Gamba Jr., to manage the vineyards. In 2000, Gamba Vineyards and Winery was launched and proudly carries on the family tradition with a devotion to organic and sustainable farming.

Organically grown, dry farmed and using old world farming techniques, the grapes in “Alto Piano” were harvested and vinified separately with a natural yeast fermentation. The result is dark wild berry aromas with subtle hints of spice, wrapped in a creamy texture with a proportionate touch of oak and counterpoint of acidity that keeps the wine fresh and a pleasure to enjoy.
