ABOUT THE WINE:

“Block 4B” is a rare stand-alone bottling of one of the best blocks on the Hirsch Vineyard known as East Ridge. It was planted in the early 1990s, mostly on AXR-1 rootstock. The vines on the East Ridge began to show phylloxera in 1994. The phylloxera moved slowly, so the vines had a chance to extend their root range. The winery decided not to replant them in the late 90s, and instead to farm with the phylloxera until the time finally came to tear out and replant these beloved vineyards. Block 4B was the first parcel to be replanted and it shows the exceptional quality of this section of the vineyard.

David Hirsch will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award during the 2025 Sonoma County Barrel Auction. This recognition honors the significant impact of groundbreaking work in the wine community to raise the profile of Sonoma County wines. David founded Hirsch Vineyards in 1980, then after 22 years of growing grapes, he built the winery in 2002 and started making his own wines.

The wines of the East Ridge tend to be tannic. Winemaker Jasmine Hirsch therefore keeps these wines slightly cooler in the first part of the fermentation and much of the extraction takes place at this time. About halfway through fermentation, the temperature is allowed to rise slightly, and extraction is limited to one action per day. “Block 4B” is a rich, silky wine with a juicy attack that opens to a powerful yet elegant mid palate. It is an energetic and focused wine, with notes of dark cherries, ripe strawberries and cassis.
