Lot #31 GARDEN CREEK RANCH VINEYARDS WINERY
Garden Creek Vineyard
- Alexander Valley
ABOUT THE WINE:
The Wappo tribe named the Mayacamas Mountains for the powerful everlasting howls of the mountain lions and coyotes roaming the majestic countryside. The howling penetrates the valley today and to hear it is to understand the great respect the Wappo had for the sanctity and power of plants, animals and land. The “Howling Mountain” barrel auction lot honors the undeniable commitment to the land, which has been farmed by the Warnelius-Miller family for the past 53 years. Garden Creek Vineyard exclusively sells their wines to their mailing list members who must visit the property prior to being granted access to their wines. This is the only opportunity one of their wines will be available to customers outside of their membership, making it an incredibly special lot for the winning bidder.
Native Californian Justin Miller and his wife, Karin Warnelius-Miller, who is from Sweden, exemplify New World and Old World in every way. Both second generation winegrowers and winemakers, they were among the first winegrowers to commit to sustainable vineyard practices and their property was chosen as a landmark vineyard by Sonoma County Winegrowers. As innovative farmers and leaders, their viticulture ideals includes composting fermentation waste; planting annual cover crops with grazing integration of livestock; minimizing soil disturbance; use of only organic materials; a commitment to 100% solar power energy usage; recycling gray water; and housing all vineyard employees on property, demonstrating their lifetime commitment to a healthy local ecosystem.
The 2021 vintage will be remembered for low yields with intensely-flavored, small-sized berries: producing more intense flavors, aromatics and weight, alongside excellent harvesting conditions. With delicate care, each cluster was night-harvested by hand, capturing each cluster’s utmost maturity and flavor. Justin and Karin believe in showcasing their land in their wines, which leads them to use indigenous yeast fermentation and minimal intervention, allowing their wines to speak for themselves. Their wines are crafted to age for decades after spending 22 months in oak and five additional years in bottle before an allocation release to their membership. The result for “Howling Mountain” is a wine that exudes ancient power and finesse with vibrant, alluring aromatics of blackberry, crème de cassis, wet tobacco, dark chocolate, luscious pronounced tannins, and a lingering, tantalizing everlasting howling finish.
