Lot #32 BENOVIA WINERY
TILTON HILL MID SLOPE
Tilton Hill Vineyard
- Sonoma Coast
ABOUT THE WINE:
This never before, never again wine comes from heirloom clones of Pinot Noir planted on the middle slope of Benovia’s Tilton Hill Vineyard. Mid-slope is a term used in Burgundy to refer to the portion of vineyards where winegrapes used predominantly in Grand Cru wines are planted. This portion of the Tilton Hill vineyard produces some of Benovia’s highest rated wines. Tilton Hill is the winery’s coldest estate vineyard and pushes the boundaries of cool climate viticulture. Due to maritime breezes and abundant fog, this site rarely reaches 75 degrees Fahrenheit in the summertime. This magnificent coastal property is perched on a ridgetop near the town of Freestone, located just a few miles from the Pacific Ocean. The vines are grown with a very high density to keep yields low and flavors complex. Benovia waits patiently for these grapes to ripen and knows the grapes are ready when they pick the last of the Gravenstein apples from the property’s ancient trees.
Benovia embraces the winemaking philosophy of “exceptional vineyard sites produce wines with remarkable personality and extraordinary character.” Their commitment to understanding the tiniest details of every block within their sustainably farmed vineyards results in an award-winning portfolio that perfectly balances tradition with innovation.
The grapes are harvested at night and then rigorously hand-sorted prior to destemming into open top fermenters, promising a wine with loads of baking spice and dark blackberry. The wine’s complex aromas of vine-ripened raspberries harmonize with rose potpourri, mixed berries, and white pepper on the palate.
