Lot #46 MAURITSON WINES
NOTHING PETITE ABOUT DURIF
Rockpile Ridge Vineyard
ABOUT THE WINE:
Durif is the original name of the grape varietal known today as Petite Sirah and it’s a comical misnomer to have the word “petite” associated with what is often a very “big” wine. The “Nothing Petite about Durif” barrel auction lot was created to highlight the scarcity of the grape in Mauritson’s vineyards as well as the uncommon practice of making a 100% Petite Sirah wine. Mauritson no longer makes a varietal Petite Sirah. With only 3 acres planted in Rockpile, it’s a critical component for blending into their Zinfandels and there’s not enough left to make its own bottling. The 2021 vintage was absolutely outstanding and the complexity of the wine was compelling enough to make this barrel auction lot from 100% Petite Sirah.
The fruit for this barrel lot was sourced from the Rockpile Ridge Vineyard on Mauritson’s original Rockpile property that they have owned and farmed since the 1860s. Rockpile is a unique place to grow grapes and is also one of the smallest AVAs in the country. This wine was fermented in open top tanks and handled as gently as possible to retain the varietal character.
“Nothing Petite about Durif” is a dark, brooding wine full of berry fruits, mineral and spice. Petite Sirah has amazing color and phenomenal structure, allowing it to age gracefully for many years. If anyone is lucky enough to have an older bottle of Mauritson Petite Sirah around, it is drinking spectacularly. This will be a wine to hold and enjoy for years to come.
