Lot #50 RAMEY WINE CELLARS
CHARDONNAY IN CONCRETE EGG
- Russian River Valley
ABOUT THE WINE:
Never before has David Ramey produced an estate Chardonnay entirely fermented and aged in concrete egg. Hailed as “Professor Chardonnay” by Wine Spectator, David has made 100-point Chardonnays and his efforts have helped shape the way many wines in the United States are made today. Over the years, David Ramey has helped introduce traditional, artisanal winemaking techniques in California during a period when making wine by the university book was the norm. For this reason, the Sonoma County Vintners are bestowing David with the very first Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2022 Sonoma County Barrel Auction.
Westside Farms, Ramey’s 75-acre estate ranch, has been in agriculture since the mid-1800s and borders a half mile of the Russian River. The site is low lying, trapping morning fog which helps cool the vines, maintaining the fruit’s natural acidity. The egg shape of the concrete fermenter naturally keeps the lees in suspension compared to barrel. Aging on the fine lees for 18 months in the small, concrete vessel provides the benefits of extended barrel aging without imparting oak character. Ramey’s decades of experience with the varietal, enhanced by concrete aging, results in a fruit-driven Chardonnay laced with wet stone and finishes mouthwatering crispness.
