ABOUT THE WINE:

This lively barrel auction lot was made from Pinot Noir grown in Little Boot Vineyard, so it naturally had to be called “If the Boot Fits, Drink It!” This vineyard is known for creating wines with lower alcohol, higher acidity, and lots of power. The wine was fermented in an unusual way – in a single barrel/puncheon, standing on the head, with one head taken out, like a large bucket. This has made the wine lighter, fresher and fruitier while being less tannic.

Founder & Winemaker James Hall has made every single Patz & Hall wine since the winery was founded in 1988. Little Boot Vineyard, planted exclusively for Patz & Hall by the iconic Charlie Chenoweth, is cool due to its proximity to Bodega Bay, with shallow Goldridge series sandy loam soils. The grapes are Calera clone and were harvested on September 21, 2021, which is already proving to be an excellent vintage. The wine was fermented with native yeast and punched down by hand.

The wine is very fruit forward, with lots of raspberry and cherry flavors that are accented by hints of clove and pepper. It has a juicy texture with energetic freshness and the palate is complex and layered. This five-case lot was aged in 100% new Taransaud “Pure T” oak and bottled after 16 months. This wine is sure to gain depth, roundness and complexity with further aging.
