ABOUT THE WINE:

“Devil in the Details” is the delicious blend of four vineyards that Ram’s Gate Winery usually reserves for their single vineyard program. It seemed to be a pretty simple premise for this first-ever blend, but merging the personalities of very distinct AVAs can be a mystifying process. All four wines from all four vineyards were vinified and barrel-aged separately and with respect to the nuances of their specific terroir. The resulting blend lets a little of each shine through and is truly irresistible.

Founded in 2011, Ram’s Gate Winery has long been recognized for their wines, architectural beauty, refined hospitality programs and sublime culinary experiences. Building on a decade of discovery, the culmination of stewardship, careful farming, and thoughtful winemaking shines in every bottle. Today, Director of Winemaking Joe Nielsen is parlaying the estate vineyard into a model of thoughtful precision farming and sustainability, while also elevating each wine in the portfolio to its highest vineyard expression. Their estate vineyard is uniquely positioned – the Sonoma Valley ends on the south side of the vineyard, the Sonoma Coast on the east, and Carneros on the west – making the site a compass rose of Sonoma County.

“Devil in the Details” was made with fruit from Bush Crispo and El Diablo vineyards in the Russian River, Gap’s Crown from Sonoma Coast and the Ram’s Gate Winery estate vineyard in Carneros. Joe has a firm vision of where he wants to take his wines. He’s inspired by French wines, but relishes upending traditional techniques and using the California sun and climate to his advantage. He seeks out small, unknown vineyards and coopers that he can work closely with to pull the best expression of the fruit. The result for this first-time Pinot Noir blend is cranberry, blackberry and a hint of spice, but also tobacco, some earthiness and a little “je ne sais quoi” that makes it magical.
