Lot #56 SEBASTIANI VINEYARDS & WINERY
1825 MISSION RED
- Sonoma Valley
ABOUT THE WINE:
For the first time ever, Sebastiani has produced an exclusive blend named “1825 Mission Red” as a tribute to their historic Mission Vineyard. This was the very first vineyard in Sonoma Valley, originally planted to the Black Mission grape in 1825 by the Franciscan Padres of San Francisco Solano de Sonoma Mission to produce sacramental wine. In 1904, Italian immigrant Samuele Sebastiani purchased this vineyard and began the winemaking legacy of Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery. The Mission Vineyard was granted California Historic Landmark status (No. 739) in 1960. Being produced in the fantastic high quality, very low-yield year of 2021 makes this wine even more noteworthy.
Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery has been a pioneering producer of Sonoma County wines since it’s founding in 1904. Today, the Mission Vineyard is planted to Merlot and Malbec, and features well-draining, rocky volcanic soil and moderately warm temperatures which conspire to produce tiny, intensely concentrated berries. These vines offer a true expression of Sonoma Valley terroir, making them the perfect grapes to use in this barrel auction lot’s exclusive homage to the winery’s history.
1825 Mission Red was hand-harvested and hand-sorted, as well as fermented with it’s own native yeast. After primary fermentation, the wine was racked to barrels for the secondary malolactic fermentation, and aged for 18 months in combination of French (25% new) and American oak (50% new), with the remaining in neutral oak barrels. Expect flavors of decadent blackberry liqueur, Framboise, creamy cacao and lengthy, echoing velvety tannins.
