ABOUT THE WINE:

This is a rare opportunity to explore how vine age affects Chardonnay. Rombauer Vineyards has set aside 10 cases of 2021 Chardonnay from the Sangiacomo family’s Home Ranch in the Carneros region of Sonoma County for this “Age & Beauty” barrel auction lot. Five cases are sourced from this vineyard’s oldest block, planted in 1982; the other five are from a block planted in 2002. The Sangiacomo family has farmed in Carneros for generations, and Rombauer’s single-vineyard Home Ranch Chardonnay from the family’s original homestead is one of their most critically acclaimed wines. Do vines planted two decades apart produce different wines? This lot will let you find out for yourself.

When Rombauer decided to look to Carneros for Chardonnay fruit sourcing in the 1990s, the Sangiacomo’s prized family vineyard, Home Ranch, became their first vineyard source. The Sangiacomo family has farmed this land since 1927, first as fruit trees, then planted it to grapes in 1980.

This fruit was hand picked and whole cluster pressed, with primary and secondary fermentation in French oak barrels, then individual barrels were selected to highlight the depth provided from the Home Ranch vineyard. The wines are rich and textured with flavors of peach, nectarine, honey, fresh baked pie and vanilla. They have incredible depth with great length on the palate, making it difficult to pick one as a favorite!
