ABOUT THE WINE:

“Edoardo’s Journey” pays homage to the beginning of the Seghesio family story in Sonoma County and the Zinfandel and Sangiovese grapes that continue to be made into beautiful wines today. In 1895, Italian immigrant Edoardo Seghesio and his new wife, Angela, planted Zinfandel vines that are still growing strong, five generations and 125 vintages later. For this historical barrel auction lot, the Sangiovese comes from the second propagation of Chianti Station clonal material and the Zinfandel clone is from the first planted vines on Rockpile that have been grafted onto vines at Home Ranch. It’s a delicious combination that has never before been made!

Seghesio believes in the importance of family more than ever – the one you’re born into and the one you create; the family with whom you celebrate and share life’s moments, big and small. The winemaking team, led by Winemaker Andy Robinson, takes an Old World approach in the cellar, harvesting and fermenting wines in small lots and using techniques and methods more often associated with Burgundy to achieve wines of balance, purity and character.

Grapes for “Edoardo’s Journey” were hand harvested and sorted before being gently destemmed and transferred into small open-top fermentors. The fermentations were punched down by pneumatic plunger during maceration for 9-12 days before the free run wine was drained and transferred to barrel. The wines completed malolactic fermentation in barrel. The Zinfandel and Sangiovese were blended post fermentation. Zinfandel was inoculated with a yeast strain selected from Home Ranch while the Sangiovese was inoculated with native yeast. The wines aged 14 months in a combination of French oak (neutral & new). Expect intense aromatics of red fruit complemented by briary black raspberry notes and savory notes spice box. On the palate, the wine is rich with mouthwatering acidity and hints of flint. The finish is beautifully long, capturing the essence of a Sangiovese-style wine, and will pair well with earthy and savory dishes such as mushroom and pork belly risotto.
