ABOUT THE WINE:

This unique auction lot is a focused expression of the Twomey estate vineyard, Last Stop, through the lens of the clone 122. Located in the heart of the tiny hamlet of Forestville, Last Stop is a Twomey site in the Russian River Valley. Its name is based on the vineyard’s location, the last stop on a former rail line that ran from San Francisco to Forestville in the early 1900s. Originally hailing from Vonse Romanée, clone 122 highlights the nuance, complexity and elegance of the distinctive Russian River Valley site. People often say that all Pinot Noir roads lead to Burgundy, but clone 122 traveled in the opposite direction and ended up in Block 14 of the Twomey estate, Last Stop, on a small plateau of Goldridge soil overlooking the eastern portion of the site. Director of Winemaking Justin Hirigoyen has been consistently impressed with the focus and elegance of this clone, so he decided to create this one-of-a-kind auction lot.

Founded in 1999 by the Duncan Family of Silver Oak, Twomey combines experience and a sense of curiosity with the exploration of expressive vineyards for its wines, made to be savored with family and friends. Twomey pursues and sustainably farms sites that reveal a delicate balance between place and the classic characteristics of their respective growing regions. “Making wine is built upon a foundation of observing and listening. If you can capture the essence of the site, the vintage and some of the character of the people behind the wine, then you have an opportunity to capture something truly great and unique,” says Justin.

Barrel auction lot “Boxcar No. 122” highlights the balanced and nuanced qualities of the Russian River Valley. The combination of site, clone, vintage and winemaking all come together to create a harmonious and singular expression of bright, floral Pinot Noir aromas complimented by an elegant tannin structure that is both firm and fine. The concentration and supple nature of the outstanding 2021 vintage defines the palate texture and leads to a lingering, fresh finish.
