Lot #7 BROOKS NOTE
WIND AND SEA
Paradise Vineyard 80%, Panther Ridge Vineyard 20%
- Petaluma Gap
ABOUT THE WINE:
“Wind and Sea” is a blend of two vineyards from the Petaluma Gap AVA boasting exceptional concentration of fruit. Panther Ridge, which is biodynamically farmed, sits at an elevation of 1,000 feet on the western slopes of Sonoma Mountain and features rocky, volcanic soil. Paradise Vineyard is on a knoll overlooking San Pablo Bay. Both are blasted by wind and fog from the Petaluma Gap, with Paradise getting an extra dose of sea air from the bay. The wind and the sea worked together to create a stellar 2021 Pinot Noir barrel auction lot.
Garry Brooks began Brooks Note with his wife Joanne Note Brooks in 2012, after working with Michael Browne, Shane Finely and Dan Goldfield. His style blends elements of those very talented winemakers with a sensibility of his own. This year, Garry and Joanne are celebrating the opening of their new tasting room and production facility in downtown Petaluma.
Paradise Vineyard produces dark, concentrated Pinot Noirs. Panther Ridge produces bold, floral wines with plenty of structure. Garry takes a balanced, minimalist approach to winemaking, finding an equilibrium between acidity and fruit flavors in the wine. He uses some whole cluster fermentation and about one-third new oak barrels with toasts that highlight the fruit and spice character of the vineyard. “Wind and Sea” shines with aromas of strawberry, dark cherry, plum, black tea, and leather with a hint of tarragon. The powerful entry with notes of rose, cranberry, tart cherry, sweet fruit, and a little minerality is supported by firm tannin and beautiful structure. The long finish lingers with tart cherry and a little licorice.
