Lot #9 CHAPPELLET VINEYARD
APPLE LANE MAGIC
Apple Lane Vineyard
- Russian River Valley
ABOUT THE WINE:
One Sonoma County Barrel Auction winner will be lucky enough to experience true enchantment in a bottle in the form of Chappellet Vineyard’s “Apple Lane Magic.” Winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus selected this single barrel of Clone 667 to showcase the delicious chemistry between this idyllic vineyard and this special clone. Located nine miles from the Pacific Ocean, in the cool Green Valley of the Russian River Valley appellation, Apple Lane is a hillside vineyard farmed by the Dutton Brothers. Sandy Goldridge soils limit the crop, while the mild marine climate and clockwork fog ensure ideal ripening. This single-clone selection is made using grapes from some of the most prized blocks of Apple Lane and aged in French oak.
Since 1967, the Chappellets have been dedicated stewards of their land, making a commitment to sustainable and organic practices, both in the vineyard and at the winery. Chappellet is a family business that has long relationships with some of the best growers in Sonoma County. Beginning in the early 1980s, Chappellet became one of the first wineries to plant cover crops to prevent soil erosion. In the years since, this early foray into sustainable viticulture has evolved to include a 20,000-square-foot solar system that offsets 100% of the winery’s energy bill, a state-of-the-art water processing system that allows the winery to return almost 100% of its process water (approx. 1 million gallons annually) for vineyard irrigation, and a robust on-site composting program that produces over 100 tons of compost annually.
“Apple Lane Magic” is a dark Pinot Noir that displays alluring concentration and elegance. It begins with vibrant wild berry, currant, pomegranate, and rose petal aromas, underscored by hints of subtle oak, white pepper, nutmeg, and spice. On the smooth, mouth-filling palate, sleek acidity and silky tannins add poise and polish to the lush cherry and berry flavors, with sophisticated notes of fresh ginger and orange bitters lingering on the long, graceful finish.
