Lot #17 Deerfield Ranch Winery

Deerfield Ranch Winery’s “Sonoma Private Reserve Select” is a one-off Bordeaux style Meritage blend by master blender, winemaker and owner Robert Rex and winemaker, Cecilia Valdivia. Blended by taste from just the best tasting barrels from each of the five varietal lots, the winning bidder will have the opportunity to join Robert and Cecilia for the final blending trials for this unique “Sonoma Private Reserve Select.”

Deerfield Ranch Winery is a small family owned winery, now in its 41st harvest in Sonoma Valley, producing around 10,000 cases per year from estate and terroir driven vineyards throughout Sonoma County. Robert and PJ Rex met at UC Berkeley in 1968. They started as home winemakers after PJ gave Robert a winemaking kit in 1972 as a thank you for fixing her Alfa Romeo. Ten years later, they left their city careers to turn their hobby into their profession, found Deerfield Ranch in Kenwood, got married there, and turned a horse barn into their first winery. In 2000, they bought 47 acres on Highway 12 and built the Deerfield Ranch Winery and cave.

The grapes for “Sonoma Private Reserve Select” were sourced from eight different vineyards. Robert has developed long-standing relationships with these vineyard owners and is very hands-on in the vineyards. Robert is the pioneer of the CleanWine® movement, which promotes wine made with low in histamines and sulfites. The 2021 vintage was one of their best of the decade, producing full-bodied wines with exceptional complexity. Expect a taste profile of a classic left bank Bordeaux from this barrel select auction lot that you can have a hand in creating.
