ABOUT THE WINE:

Joyce Vineyard is the southernmost vineyard in the West Sonoma Coast AVA. Perched on a steep, southeastern facing slope and ringed by Redwoods and coastal pines, this isolated vineyard truly feels like standing on the “Edge of the World.” Made from grapes grown on a tiny 3-acre parcel, Winemaker Joseph Ryan selected this lot from a single, one-of-a-kind puncheon, produced by master coopers in France.

Erin Brooks, co-founder of Ernest Vineyards, and Joseph Ryan are deeply involved in the West Sonoma Coast Vintners and are happy to share the special wines from this region. The Ernest Estate has grown to five vineyards in the Freestone-Occidental area on the southern end of the West Sonoma Coast. “Edge of the World” is their second vintage to carry the new West Sonoma Coast AVA designation and the first to be certified organic by CCOF.

Most of the efforts in the production of this wine are spent in the vineyard which is farmed by Kevin, Luciano, Simon, Victor, Ivan and Joseph of Barton Farming, Ernest’s very own farming company. This attention to detail during the growing season leads to a hands-off approach in the cellar. Pressed and sent to barrel after 48 hours of settling, this wine undergoes a long, cool fermentation on ambient yeasts and naturally occurring full malolactic conversion. Bottled unfined and unfiltered after an 18 month élevage, expect flavors of green pear, lemon curd, mint, white pepper, crushed rocks and slate.
