Lot #51 Joseph Swan Vineyards

Located in the heart of the famed Russian River Valley, often proclaimed ground zero for great Pinot Noir, Joseph Swan Vineyards embraces the artisanal spirit that defines this amazing growing region. For this unforgettable lot, Winemaker Rod Berglund combined fruit from two vineyards only a short distance apart. Same grape, same clone, same tight spacing, same farming, same winemaker… yet light years apart in character. One is deep, wild and gamey like the wines of Cornas in the northern Rhône, the other resembles Côte Rôtie.

The difference must be the soil. One is on fractured rocks from the Franciscan Melange, deposited some 80-100 million years ago. The other is planted on fine grained sandy Goldridge that the Wilson Grove Sea left behind about three to five million years ago. Both vineyards have always been bottled separately but in this wine, rocks meet sand in a beautiful, unique blend for the first time ever.
